Reading Intervention

Enjoying a Read

The Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach is a research-backed, multisensory method specifically designed for students with dyslexia or other reading difficulties. It teaches the building blocks of language, sounds, patterns and rules, in a way that is clear, engaging and tailored to your child’s individual needs.

OG Instruction is:

  • Explicit: Skills are taught clearly and directly.

  • Systematic: Lessons follow a structured sequence, moving from simple to complex.

  • Multisensory: Learning involves sight, sound, touch and movement to help concepts stick.

  • Cumulative: Each lesson builds on previous ones, with regular review to strengthen retention.

  • Paced to the student: Instruction is adjusted in real-time based on your child’ progress.

Goals of OG Instruction

  • Build a strong foundation in phonemic awareness and phonics

  • Improve reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension

  • Strengthen spelling through understanding language rules and patterns

  • Increase confidence and independence in reading and spelling

Session Frequency

Most students participate in 2-4 sessions per week, depending on their needs and goals. More frequent sessions provide stronger reinforcement and faster skill development, especially for students with significant gaps in foundational reading skills.

Writing Intervention

Child writing

The Writing Revolution (TWR) is a structured, research-based approach to teaching writing that helps students become clear, confident communicators. It’s not just about writing essays. It’s about teaching students how to organize their thoughts, build strong sentences and express themselves. TWR is built on the idea that writing should be taught explicitly and in small manageable steps. Lessons start with the basics of sentence construction and gradually move into more complex writing.

TWR is for students who:

  • Struggle to get ideas on paper

  • Write in incomplete or run-on sentences

  • Don’t know how to organize paragraphs or essays

  • Have difficulty with grammar and structure

  • Need support in writing for any school subject

Session Frequency

Students typically find success with 1-2 writing sessions per week. For students already receiving OG instruction, writing support can be incorporated into lessons (with an added session per week), providing a seamless, integrated approach to literacy development.
